Trips for Kids

We sponsor the Chicago chapter of Trips for Kids. The inspiration for Trips for Kids came in 1986, when the founder, Marilyn Price, thought how wonderful it would be if the inner city kids with whom she worked could join her biking up a mountain. Most of those kids had never challenged themselves physically. And all spent their days surrounded by cement as well as constant exposure to drugs, violence and gang involvement. After functioning as a pilot mountain biking program for two years, Trips for Kids incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1988.

In 2002, the first Midwest chapter of Trips for Kids - TFK Fox Valley – was founded. The program goals were to expose youth to nature and decrease the number of youth involved in gangs, crime, drug abuse and other harmful activities by providing safe, productive and healthy activities (primarily bike rides). From 2002 until 2008, volunteers worked with many agencies in Fox Valley, and even traveled to Indiana to provide bike rides for youth.

Chicago Voyagers

At the end of 2008, in order to expand the number of youth who could be impacted by the program, Chicago Voyagers undertook the sponsorship of the chapter, moving it to Chicago and renaming it TFK Chicago Voyagers. The Chicago Voyagers board integrated the programs, adding biking to such outdoor adventure activities as canoeing, hiking, cross country skiing, rock climbing, river trips and camping.
